A Month of Movies | February 2020

Welcome back to another set of film reviews, if this is your first visit to my blog or you didn't catch last months post, I've started a series where take a look at the films I've seen at the cinema each month. So without further ado here's the films I saw with my Odeon Limitless membership throughout February, my thoughts and my recommendations!

Bad Boys for Life

I was really excited to see Bad Boys for Life, the third instalment in the series. I have fond memories of watching the first two quite a lot when I was younger. I had this strange box set containing Bad Boys, Bad Boys 2 and a film called S.W.A.T., god knows why S.W.A.T. was thrown in there but it was and I still own it to this day. I actually re-watched the first two films the day before seeing the new one. I would recommend doing this, especially if you've never seen the original set of films. There are quite a lot of references to the older ones and you'll need to fully understand and remember Marcus Burnett's (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey's (Will Smith) relationship for the plot to have the desired impact and to get enjoyment from various jokes and gags that are present throughout the film.

This is probably the best Bad Boys film to date, closely followed by the first one. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith still have the same on screen chemistry they did all those years ago. It was a joy to watch and very funny and heart-warming at times too. The characters are still the same, not all too much has changed, Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey are still the same lovable duo that pretty much only exist to get on each others nerves as well as protect each other no matter what. After all, they are Bad Boys for Life.

Underwater

Underwater was the most surprising film of the month, I can truly say I enjoyed every single second of it. It's obviously taken a lot of inspiration from Alien, this was apparent from the moment the initial trailer was released. It's pretty much just an underwater version of Alien, which I'm not against, it still had it's own quirks and it defiantly has it's own identity as well. Kristen Stewart plays the lead role which she does tremendously, she delivers a very believable performance and I couldn't take my eyes off her the entire time. Her character undeniably resembles Ellen Ripley, the protagonist of the Alien franchise, from the clothes she wears to her hero-esque leadership status.

My favourite thing about this film is that it literally starts at a point where most films would spend 30+ minutes building up to. I've never seen a film that literally jumps straight into the action in the same way this does. It had me gripped from beginning to end and I couldn't recommend it enough. I personally find a long build up at the start of an action or horror film to sometimes be boring or unnecessarily long winded, obviously this depends on the film, but with this the quick approach worked so well.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog was my most hyped film to have released this month and it did not disappoint. I was beyond excited for this film, I'm a massive fan of video games, although I've not had much experience with any of the mainstream Sonic titles, but I used to love 'Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing' and 'Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed' when I was younger, I still think that Transformed is one of the best racing games ever made. Sonic as a character is so incredibly cute and I'm all for supporting any video game adaptation and would love to see more of them in the future.

This film had quite a lot of criticism before it was released, the first official trailer showcased a very different design for Sonic compared to what was shown in the final release. The first design was truly awful, if you've been living under a rock and haven't heard about this you need to look it up right now, it's so funny and most certainly would have ruined the film if they hadn't changed it. Luckily they did change it and the new design is perfect. The plot of the film isn't mind blowing but it does the job and has a nice enough narrative and I was thoroughly entertained throughout. The acting was good, Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik was genius casting, he portrayed the character really well and one of my favourite scenes was of him dancing, it was pure Jim Carrey gold and incredibly funny. I'd highly recommend seeing this film if it's still being screened at a cinema near you, and if you're a Sonic the Hedgehog fan be sure to stay until after the first set of credits – you won't be disappointed.

Thank you so much for reading, I hope to keep up with this and write one of these every month. I love reading a good list so I hope you enjoy this format. I've already got my next cinema visit booked in and am looking forward to writing next months list. Let me know what you saw this month and what you're looking forward to seeing in the future. One of my most anticipated films this year is Halloween Kills, the next instalment in the Halloween series (October couldn't come soon enough)!
