Netflix Recommendations | 2020

With how 2020 has been going so far I'm fairly confident I'm not alone in saying; I have taken comfort in curling up on the sofa to watch series upon series of Netflix, Disney Plus and Amazon Prime content lately. Having spent quite a lot of time at home watching some amazing Netflix TV shows I thought I'd comprise them into a list to share some of my favourites with you.

Below Deck

Below Deck has become my main obsession for the past couple of months. It's a reality TV show where each series is set on a different multi million dollar, privately owned yacht that houses around 10 crew members who live and work on board, meeting their clients demands at the drop of a hat. The clients themselves often become the stars of the show, with them being particularly needy (which I suppose you would be, having paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to receive a five star service). The show follows a different crew and boat each season (with a few returning faces) in which we get to witness the highs and lows of the yachting world.

One of the main reasons I love this show is because it's jam packed full of arguments, romance and drama. No episode is a dull episode and there is almost always at least one returning Yachtie from the previous season which is what's kept me engaged for so long. Sadly only the first two seasons are on Netflix at the moment, so if you're hooked after watching those (like I was) you'll have to make your way over to Hayu on Amazon where the remaining five seasons can be found, along with multiple spin off shows, but I wont get into those now.

Outer Banks

Outer Banks really surprised me. It took me a couple of episodes to really get into it, but once I did the story and relationships between the characters really gripped me. It's about a tight-knit group of teenagers who go looking for missing treasure following the suspicious disappearance of the lead character's father. They come into issues with the law and the wealthy and supposedly more superior side of town as the truth of the missing treasure is revealed. It's really interesting watching the dynamics of the friendship group as the series progresses and I would recommend giving it a try as it really picks up and becomes one of the best shows Netflix has had to offer this year.

Good Girls | Season 3

Good Girls quickly became one of my favourite Netflix originals after its first season back in 2018 and I actually wrote about it on my last Netflix recommendations list (because it's just that good!). Season 3 did not disappoint either, I was hooked from beginning to end and binged it all in a matter of days. If you've not seen the series, it's about three ordinary women (working mums and wives) who are struggling for cash and decide to pull off a one time heist which involves burgling a grocery store safe. But as you can imagine, one thing leads to another and they find themselves in a whole heap of trouble (the kind of trouble that will probably see a forth season next year). I would very highly recommend giving this a go if you've not already, it's super enjoyable to watch and easy to follow if you're after something lighthearted.

Love on the Spectrum

Love on the Spectrum is a documentary series that follows a group of young adults who are on the autistic spectrum looking for love. It's very similar to The Undateables which is a UK documentary on Channel 4, it even has the same style of narration and tone throughout the series. I actually prefer Love on the Spectrum though because unlike The Undateables, Love on the Spectrum follows the same individuals throughout the entire series which means you get a chance to see more of how their dates go and what they get up to next. I would highly recommend watching this especially if you enjoy reality dating or romance shows. I hope they do a second series as it's left me wanting more.

Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever is like the perfect teenage rom-com movie, but instead of being a movie it's a TV show. That's the best way I can think of to describe the vibe it gives off anyway. It's essentially a coming of age story that follows an American-Indian girl called Devi as she navigates school, friendships and a new found interest in romance, whilst also trying to process the death of her father. It has been renewed for a second series by Netflix so I'd give this a go if it sounds like your sort of thing as there'll be more of this coming soon.

The Society

The Society has a really interesting plot, it's about a group of seniors who return home from a cancelled field trip to find that everyone who lived in their home town is gone / disappeared. They then have to work out how to live in a 'world' that has no rules, government, punishment system and a limited food supply. It's seriously good and I would recommend watching it straight away, the only downside is that it ends on a huge cliffhanger and due to Netflix cancelling the show (even though they had already started production of the second season) it will never have a true ending which is a huge shame because as a whole I think the idea has so much potential and deserved to be explored further.

Trinkets | Season 2

Trinkets season two has just launched on Netflix and I've already binged the entire thing. Trinkets is a Netflix Original about Elodie, a girl who develops an addiction to stealing, after her mother's untimely death. She attends a shop lifters anonymous group where she makes two unlikely friendships with classmates, Moe and Tabitha who are also struggling with their shoplifting habits. The show continues to follow the highs and lows of their school, romantic and family lives, whilst the trio form a closer bond despite their differences. It's a must watch in my opinion!

Hopefully this list has given you some inspiration for what to binge watch next. There was so much more I could have included; Ozark, Space Force, Tiger King, Love is Blind and After Life to name a few. They are all mindbogglingly good in their own ways but I thought I'd stick to the more obscure titles to hopefully introduce you to something new.

Let me know if you enjoyed this list and what you've been watching during lockdown.
