A Month of Movies | July 2021

Cinemas are finally back open and that can only mean one thing, the return of my ‘A Month of Movies’ Review series If you didn’t know, early last year (just before COVID hit) I started a series on my blog where I would post monthly mini film reviews as an Odeon Limitless member. So here I am (post-lockdown) to keep you up to date with what’s hot and what’s not in the world of cinema. Funnily enough all the films I saw last month were horror films. There are a lot of horror films releasing at the moment and a lot still to be released, luckily for me I love a good scary movie.

Freaky

Freaky is a horror comedy from the same director as Happy Death Day and it takes influence from slasher classics ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘Scream’. The opening sequence in particular had me on the edge of my seat and fully immersed within minutes. Vince Vaughn smashes it out the park with his performance, he portrays both the troubled serial killer and teenage girl personas incredibly well and steals the limelight whenever he's on screen. Freaky doesn’t take itself too seriously and pays tribute to horror franchises we all know and love. I’m sure by now we’ve all seen at least one body swap movie, for me ‘Freaky Friday’ and ‘The Hot Chick’ stand out as two of the very best and although Freaky uses a similar concept, it’s unique and has its own sadistic sense of humour that runs throughout. It well and truly surpassed my expectations and to put it simply; Freaky was a really enjoyable watch that I’d highly recommend.

A Quiet Place Part 2

A Quiet Place Part 2 was breath-taking. Hands down one the best movies I’ve seen at the cinema in years. Unlike a lot of highly anticipated sequels, I'm happy to announce that A Quiet Place Part 2 was just as good, if not better than it’s first counterpart. It kicks off right where the first film left us, so it’s easy to grasp what’s happening initially and easy to follow throughout too. It had my attention from beginning to end and it’s use of flashbacks built on the story and characters we already know and care about from the first film. The pacing was spot on and I left the cinema wanting more.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions is the second instalment in the franchise. Sadly it didn’t live up to my expectations. I loved the first film and I felt as though it brought something new to the table, it was something I’d never seen done before, with the exception of ‘Saw’ which I suspect it is heavy influenced by. The second one just didn’t have the same effect. If you’ve seen the trailer you've pretty much seen the whole film. They gave away too many plot points leading up to it's release and it didn’t really go beyond what we’d already been shown. I still enjoyed the experience of going to see Tournament of Champions, but the ending was a little bit underwhelming and way too unrealistic to be taken seriously. I will be seeing a possible third instalment, but felt a little bit disappointed by this one. It could have been better.

Old

From everything I’ve seen and heard other people talking about online, Old hasn’t received very good reviews. I however, really enjoyed it. It was beautifully unique and atmospheric and the premise alone had me interested from the very first sneak peak up until it’s release. For those of you that haven’t seen or heard of Old, it’s essentially about a group of people who are on holiday; relaxing on a private beach on which they start to age rapidly, discovering that for every hour they spend there they age by two years. I won't say much more though, because I don't want to give away any key plot points that could spoil your viewing experience. While I did really enjoy this film, I must admit that the acting didn’t blow me away and more could have been done with the concept, but what we did get was solid and a must watch for any movie lovers.

Thank you so much for reading my first blog post in nearly a year. The last few years in particular have been pretty crazy and particularly busy, but on the other hand, it's also felt like there’s not been much going on at the same time. I’m really happy that cinemas have opened up again and I look forward to writing many more posts like this in the near future. There are some really exciting releases coming soon, a couple of stand out ones being 'Halloween Kills' and 'Free Guy', so keep your eyes peeled for more of my Month of Movies series coming soon.
